TohatsuOriginally founded in 1922, Tohatsu Corporation, then named Takata Motor Research Institute, manufactured railcars and portable engine generators. In 1949 Tohatsu began producing portable fire pumps and in 1953 production of Tohatsu motorcycles began. While Tohatsu still produces portable fire pumps, production of Tohatsu motorcycles ended in 1965. Today Tohatsu motorcycles are highly coveted by collectors worldwide.

In 1956, Tohatsu became Japan’s first outboard manufacturer with the production of the “Tohatsu OB-2”, an air-cooled 1.5 hp outboard. Throughout the world, Tohatsu has demonstrated the reliability of their engines, making them one of the world’s most reputable and largest outboard manufacturers.

In January 2005, Tohatsu opened a new state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in the mountainous area of central Japan that boasts over 370,000 sq. ft. of space and has a production capacity of over 200,000 units per year. Tohatsu’s new plant uses technologically advanced automated machinery to produce reliable outboards with award winning reputations. All Tohatsu outboards are produced in their state-of-the-art factory located in Komagane, Japan.

Tohatsu outboards from 2hp to 140hp, including both traditional carbureted 2-strokes as well as new fuel efficient 4-strokes and Direct Injection 2-strokes (TLDI series) can be found on every continent of the world.
